ORIGIN
|
The Indian
Institute of Metals (IIM) was established in 1946 with the
objectives of "To promote and advancing the study and practice of
the Science and Art of making, shaping & treating of metals and
alloys, to promote the interests of Metallurgical Engineers and to
maintain just and honorable practice in the metallurgical
profession; to encourage dissipation of metallurgical knowledge and
information through publications, libraries, endowment of
professorships, studentship and scholarships and prized for
research, to act as honorary advisors to government, industries or
individuals engaged in the making, shaping

and
treating of metals and alloys". Late J. J. Gandhi was the first
President and Late Dara P. Antia was the first honorary Secretary of the Institute. |
THE ORGANISATION
The
Institute is managed by the IIM Council which is appointed by the
members at the Annual General Meeting. For assisting in efficient
functioning, the Council appoints various Sub-committees to monitor
membership, finance, education & examinations, international
relations, Chapter relations, publications, IIM awards & honours.

Presently, IIM has 52 Chapters situated across the length and
breadth of the Country to carry out the activities, to reach out to
all the members and to ensure their participation and functioning in
conjunction with the three divisions namely, Ferrous Division,
Nonferrous Division and Metal Science Division. |
ACTIVITIES OF IIM
The
activities of the Institute include:

there is a small permanent staff of the Institute, almost all the
activities are carried out through the honorary services of the
Office-bearers, Council Members, Chapter Chairman, Secretaries and
Treasures as well as a large number of the members.
